Comcast Gives $25K to North End Elementary, Action Team


Nearly 100 people gathered April 21 for the 11th annual Comcast Cares Day at the Alondra Hernandez Community Garden on Portland Street — and at three other neighborhood gardens throughout the city's North end — to additionally mark Earth Day and the annual North End Cleanup.

Altrusa Club Members Launch Little Free Library


Altrusa International of Central Connecticut launched their newest literacy project for Middletown Community with the first "Altrusa Little Free Library" at NEAT (North End Action Team) 654 Main Street location. "The Little Free Library" was unveiled on February 29th by Altrusa club members and Izzi Greenberg the Executive Director of the North End Action Team.

Swamps, Deserts, and Justice: Food Issues in Middlesex County


I have a new favorite term: “food swamp”.
You may have heard of “food deserts” – neighborhoods lacking super markets or any opportunity to buy fresh, healthy food. Food swamps are neighborhoods with plenty of food – except it’s all crap. Fatty, salty, nearly nutrition-less food churned out from fast food restaurants and convenience stores.

Middletown's NEAT To Develop Community Garden on Portland Street


The North End Action Team will develop a community garden at 20 Portland St. in the spring on the site where two dilapidated houses were taken down last summer.
 
The community garden will be dedicated to Alondra Hernandez, a third-grader at Macdonough School who died in February, said Bobbye Knoll, community organizer for NEAT.

Middletown's 'Middnight On Main' To Feature 100 Performances

The first-ever city-wide New Year's Eve celebration – Middnight on Main – will include more than 100 performances in 12 venues, fireworks, a film festival, speed dating, food trucks and many family activities.

Middletown Demolishes Two Houses On Portland Street

MIDDLETOWN —

Two houses on one cramped piece of property on Portland Street in the North End have been demolished by the city.
Planning Director William Warner said that he will make a recommendation to the economic development committee that the city try to sell the property to the adjacent property owners.
