Ferry Street Community Garden: The Ferry Street Community Garden was started in 1999 as a way to create attractive community open space
available for use by North End residents. It has become an active community gardening program involving 20 gardeners from throughout the
North End. The Garden was built on a plot of demolished blighted building and donated for the use of the neighborhood by the City of Middletown.
The garden was subdivided into plots for individual and family gardens, a children's garden and an herb garden. The Ferry Street Community
Garden (FSCG) was also home to NEAT's mural project, painted by North End
residents and portraying a scene of immigrants arriving on Ferry Street, the
Arts in the Garden series, and the Ferry Street Community Garden party, a formal
garden party organized and hosted by resident leaders and typically drawing 200
participants including a broad representation from the City of Middletown. The
Garden was a great source of ride to the neighborhood and served as an
unofficial neighborhood center for birthday parties, informal meetings, and
community gatherings. The garden was funded with support from the Middletown
Substance Abuse Prevention Council, and through donations from local nurseries.
